Brainstorming
Caution: Work in Progress
With the first day of class came our first project; designing a bottle opener. Before splitting up into pairs to begin said project we learned about the physics of cantilevers. A Cantilever consists of a projecting structure that is supported at one of its ends and is able to withstand force/bear weight. It turns out most bottle openers are tiny, ornate cantilevers. Much like other varieties of cantilevers, the strength of bottle openers can be determined by calculating their deflection. While this property is affected by several components of an object's design, for this project we are limited to focusing on alterning beam length and shape to create a strong product.
Below are some of the preliminary designs my partner, Vicki Ngan, and I came up with while brainstorming.
